We have sourced our range of clothing
from a British Company called Bishopston
Trading Company who set up a
worker's co-operative in 1985 to create employment in the
Southern Indian Village of K.V.Kuppam. All employees receive
above average wages and are provided with full secure employment
throughout the year. Employees have a provident fund, retirement
gratuity, sickness benefit, access to health care and there
is a crèche available for employee's children.
Why choose organic cotton?
Organic cotton is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides
and insecticides. It is estimated that 50% of pesticides used
in India are used on cotton fields. As well as damage to the
environment, farm labours can suffer long term health problems
due direct exposure to the chemicals. Farmers also are thrown
into debt as pesticides and fertilisers are bought on credit
and debts cannot be repaid if the harvest fails.
Why choose Fair Trade?
Fair trade is an alternative approach to conventional international
trade, which aims to share the benefits of trade more equitably
between consumers, producers and the environment. Through
fair trade, farmers are paid a fair and stable price for their
produce so they are protected from the damaging fluctuations
in world market prices. In addition, their community receives
a social premium to invest in local development projects such
as education and healthcare. Workers are also paid a fair
wage, the use of forced labour and abusive child labour is
prohibited. Today, more than five million people – farmers,
workers and their families – across 58 developing countries
benefit from the international Fairtrade system.
The denim, calico and handloom fabric is woven
from organic cotton grown from non GM seed supplied by Agrocel.
This cotton is certified as Fairtrade by the Fairtrade Foundation.
The handloom cotton has irregularities which are part of its
character and do not affect it's strength. All fabrics are
machine washable at 40 degrees, and we recommend that customers
use liquid (rather than powder), environmentally friendly
detergent. Good quality non-azo reactive dyes which stand
up to machine washing are used and the only treatment to the
yarn is a rice water starch on the warp threads to enable
the weavers to span the looms - this will quickly wash out.
As with all natural textiles the colours will gently fade
over time but in our experience the colours wear very well
even under our harsh New Zealand sun. The cloth has been pre-washed
and ironed and will not shrink. Cotton is a material that will naturally wrinkle unless it is chemically treated. None of our organic cotton products are treated with any wrinkle inhibitors. Our white cotton is bleached
without the use of chlorine.
